Description:

This Olympics unit includes several Language Arts activities. They can be completed sequentially or separately as desired. One component includes the use of an online dictionary. Answers are written on notebook paper and can be self checked online. Another component includes using links to study Olympic symbols and a hard copy worksheet to be completed by pairs of students. The next component of this unit of study includes a crossword puzzle which students can self check online. And the final activity is centered around Olympic events, in which pairs of students are assigned a specific event. Students will make a graphic organizer chart using Inspiration or Kidspiration, research their topic, complete a scavenger hunt worksheet, and write a report about their event. There are also enjoyable activities included in each component such as a online painting activity, word search, riddles, and word scramble.

Objectives:

Students will explore websites for the Winter Olympics and be able to use information found on the websites to complete specific tasks related to Olympic symbols. Students will be able to use Olympic vocabulary words to complete an online dictionary quiz. Students will be able to use clues to complete an online crossword puzzle. Students will be able to create a graphic organizer to be used for describing an Olympic event. Students will use the graphic organizer and Olympic websites to research topics. Students will be able to create a writing piece on a specific Olympic event. Students will be able to use internet links to navigate to and participate in fun online activities.

Preparation:

Students will need basic instruction in research skills and the writing process.

Students will need a working knowledge of how to navigate the internet using links.

Students will need instruction in the use of Kidspiration software.

Task 1 Olympic Symbols Activity

Teacher or student will go to link (1) to print the Olympic symbol worksheet. Next, student will go to the Olympic link (2) to research information on Olympic symbols to complete worksheet. Student will use link (3) to self check answers to worksheet questions. Time permitting students will go to the fun link (4) to do an Olympic word scramble.

Task 2 Olympic Dictionary Quiz

Students will work in pairs to use link (1) to go to the Olympic Dictionary quiz. After reading questions students will click on Little Explorers.com at the top of the page to find answers to the quiz questions and write responses on notebook paper. When complete, students will self check online, using link (2). Time permitting, students will use link (3) to go to an Olympic Flag online coloring activity.

Task 3 Olympics Crossword Puzzle

Teacher or students will click on link (1) to print the crossword puzzle vocabulary words. Use link (2) to go to the Enchanted Learning Olympics Crossword puzzle clues. When complete, students use link (3) to self check the crossword puzzle.

Task 4 Olympic Events

Students will be assigned a specific Olympic event to research. Students will work in pairs to create a graphic organizer using Kidspiration which includes topics such as: Equipment, Clothing, Rules, Skills Needed, Famous Athlete for this event, Other Facts, etc. for the assigned Olympic event.

Task 5 Olympic Events continued

Students will use the links (1, 2, 3) and other printed resources to research each topic on the graphic organizer. Next, students will use the Kidspiration graphic organizer to complete a writing assignment which includes a paragraph for each category. Time permitting, students may use links (4, 5, 6) to do an online word scramble, riddles, and scavenger hunt worksheet.

Assessment:

Students will be able to self check worksheets, puzzles, word search, and word scramble on line. Kidspiration piece will be assessed according to level of completion and neatness. Written report can be assessed by the teacher through a rubric or writing process guidelines.
