Meaningful reading cannot occur without a purpose.  Even though good readers  may  not  always  consciously state  their reasons  for reading  a selection, they always have a purpose.

Good readers look at pictures when possible.                                                  
Every picture tells a story--even if the “picture” is a pie graph.  Good readers take advantage of what illustrations offer them.
Being a good reader is an important part of being a lifelong reader.  The What Good  Readers Do poster identifies nine behaviors that are common to good readers.
