Five Components of Reading
Phonemic Awareness

Phonemic awareness is the ability to hear, identify, and manipulate individual sounds, known as phonemes, in spoken words. 

Phonics
Phonics is the relationship between the spoken and written languages. It is the ability hear, identify and use sounds that make up words.
Vocabulary
Vocabulary includes knowing the meaning and pronunciation of words necessary for communication.
Fluency
Fluency is the ability to read text quickly and accurately.
Reading Comprehension
Comprehension occurs when readers are able to understand, remember and communicate with others about what they have read.  Good readers employ many strategies as they comprehend what they read.  The link above is for general resources, but because the reading process is divided into three stages, the reading strategies below are categorized accordingly.
