Monday
1st: We continued discussing Transcendentalism and Emerson's "Self-Reliance." H.W. Begin studying for our exam using the links below. Study the Age of Reason Rhetorical Devices and our 1 - 15 vocabulary for Emerson and Thoreau. Also, be sure you've read Emerson's excerpt from Nature, pgs. 219 - 221. Record five quotes/questions/insights you have from reading this text. Bring them to class tomorrow - 1/12.

2nd & 4th: We finished reading Antigone. H.W. U.P.A. #3 "I Am" poem - use handout given today for guidelines/requirements. Poem due Friday - 1/15. Use grammar links below to study for our exam. 2nd - Exam Friday - 1/15; 4th - Exam Wednesday - 1/20.

6th: We reviewed the requirements for the introduction/conclusion to the essay on Speak. We began reading Romeo and Juliet aloud. H.W. Write the introduction and conclusion for the Speak essay and bring in a full rough draft by Friday - 1/15.

Tuesday
1st: We continued discussing Emerson's essays - "Self-Reliance" and "Nature." H.W. Read Thoreau's biography, pgs. 230 - 231, and complete the assignment on the excerpt from Walden. Thoreau assignment due Thursday - 1/14. Transcendentalism calendar/quote book due Exam day - Tuesday 1/19.

Exam Review 1st & 7th: Review the beliefs of the Puritans, the Rationalists/Deists/, Romantics/Transcendentalists from the following pages in the text: pgs. 10 - 12, 13, 16 - 18, 144, & 212. Pay close attention to the information condensed in the boxes wherever they are present.

5th: We proofread our own rough drafts of our comparison/contrast essay on Speak. Final draft due Thursday - 1/14. Bring all parts of the essay on Thursday, i.e. prewrite, body paragraphs, rough draft, and final. We began reading Romeo and Juliet aloud. H.W. Finalize U.P.A. #2 - essay on Speak.

Exam Review: Review short story terminology and know all. Review essay terminology and know all. Review sentence parts, and simple and compound sentences using links below.

7th: We continued discussing Emerson's essay - "Self-Reliance." H.W. Read Thoreau's biography and excerpt from Walden, pgs. 230 - 231, and complete the assignment given today. Thoreau assignment due Thursday - 1/14. Transcendentalism calendar/quote book due Exam day - Tuesday 1/19.

Wednesday
2nd & 4th: We reviewed the directions/expectations for U.P.A. #3 "I Am" poem and bibliography. All poems must have a bibliography. Poems due Friday - 1/15. Continue with your exam review using the links provided below. 2nd period's exam is Friday; 4th period's exam is Wednesday - 1/20.

6th: We took the Fair Reading assessment. We reviewed essay terminology and short story terminology with hand-outs. H.W. Write rough draft of U.P.A. essay #2 by Friday. All students need a five paragraph compare/contrast essay on Friday. The final draft will be due exam day - Wednesday - 1/20.

5th: We turned in our final draft of our Speak essay, and we began reading Romeo and Juliet. H.W. Study for the exam using all the links for 9th/all classes on this week's homework page. Study your short story terminology. Read "Harrison Burgeron" before the exam if you'd like more time on the exam on exam day.

7th: We continued our discussion of Transcendentalism by reviewing page 212 and the tenets of Transcendentalism. H.W. Review for the exam through the various links and notes on this week's page. Continue working on and finish your calendar/quote book over Emerson, Thoreau, and Transcendentalism. Email me for directions/guidelines. Project due Tuesday - 1/19.

1st: We finished our discussion of Thoreau, Emerson, Transcendentalism, and reviewed the answers to the Age of Reason test. H.W. Study for the exam using all the links/notes/suggestions on this week's page. On your in-class exam essay, I will ask you to discuss any two the the major tenets of Transcendentalism (pg. 212), using quotes from Emerson and Thoreau to support your discussion as well as experiences from your own life.

4th: We spent time in review.

6th: We spent time in review, and I also gave the requirements for the final draft of the U.P.A. on Speak. All parts of the essay including the final draft are due exam day. To prepare for the exam, read Harrison Bergeron to save time. The link is on Thursday's lessons.
