4th Grade Writing Rubric

The following rubric is used to score writing in fourth grade. 
Students are scored between U (lowest) and 6 (highest). 

 

6 I am clearly on the topic and I know the topic well.
I am beautifully organized and use transition words throughout the entire essay.
I elaborate so well that there is nothing left to the reader that is unknown.
My sentences vary in structure throughout the entire essay.
I have few, if any, conventional errors.
My vocabulary is impressive and correct.
5 This is our goal for our writing!!
I am focused on the topic and stick with it until the end.
My organizational pattern is clear and makes sense. I use transition words most of the time.
I elaborate well with good specific examples and details.
My sentences vary in structure most of the time and I have few conventional errors.
My vocabulary is high and mostly correct.
4 I am focused on the topic with few loosely related ideas.
My organizational pattern is clear and I use some transition words.
I elaborate pretty well, at times I could be more specific or offer more details.
My sentences vary in structure and my vocabulary and conventions are adequate.
3 I am focused on the topic, but my ideas are quite loose.
I attempt to organize my paper, but it is very loose.
I use a few transitions.
I try to elaborate, but my support is uneven.
My sentences vary in structure sometimes and my vocabulary is adequate.
I have conventional errors.
 
2 I address the topic, but then lose it with very loose details.
I have little evidence of an organizational pattern.
My support is weak and I tend to repeat myself, make a list, or are not specific.
My sentences are very simple and I have several conventional errors, which make my paper hard to understand.
 
1 My writing briefly addresses the topic and seldom gets beyond a paragraph or two.
I have little or no organization and my essay may not be complete.
I don't support my ideas. I make a list and so not elaborate or give details.
I have frequent and obvious errors. My paper is difficult to understand and has weak vocabulary.
U I do not address the topic at all.
I have no organizational pattern.
I simply rewrote the prompt.
