Objectives

  • Understands various aspects of family life, structures, and roles in different cultures and in many eras (e.g., pastoral and agrarian families of early civilizations, families of ancient times, and medieval families).

  • Uses a variety of methods and sources to understand history (such as interpreting diaries, letters, newspapers; and reading maps and graphs) and knows the difference between primary and secondary sources.

Procedure

  • Begin lesson by showing the students a map. Where is Mexico? Why is it important to have them as our friends? Discuss similarities and differences that we already know about. Chart on paper in a Venn Diagram.
  • Talk to students about languages. Do we know how to speak in Spanish? Why is it important to be able to communicate?
  • Students will then be introduced to the culture of Mexico. The students will learn about the geography of the land, the language, the holiday of Cinco de Mayo and the reason for its celebration both here in the United States and Mexico.
