Wind Instrument Intonation
Want to improve your band's intonation?
We all do!!! Wouldn't it be nice not to have to tell students "lip that down, push your slide in, use a different fingering, roll out, etc." The problem is, we work tireless hours doing everything ourselves instead of helping our students understand how their instrument works and how to fix intonation problems on their own. The quizzes linked below test your student's knowledge of the intonation tendencies of their instruments. I received most of the material for the quiz from the Texas School Music Project, so if you don't agree with my flute page, don't blame me:), I'm a trumpeter. My intention is only to get this material out there in a format that is easy to use and takes up little time. Do what you will with it. I would suggest teaching an entire unit on intonation. Teach your students the basics, have them sit with a tuner and complete a tuning chart, research the net for intonation issues related to their instrument, and take the quiz.

What, you say you don't have class time to waste on all that. Ok, make it homework if you have to, but I would take the time during class. How much time would you save if you didn't have to tell your clarinet section that their throat tone Bb is sharp, lip it down. Let's teach them what notes are out of tune on their horns and how to fix it, rather than doing it for them!
